More than 20 years ago, I was given a promotion and was directed to develop an urban forestry program for the state. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it was a major turning point in my career. In this new position, not only was I working with trees, I was also working with people, and that made a big difference. I could see immediately the benefits of my professional services. I made nicer communities, planted trees in parks and along their streets and gave them advice on how to maintain them. I’m retired now, but I’m still planting trees because I enjoy it. I work a lot with volunteers and kids, and I’m continuing my professional work.
